Iran invites Pakistan to a multilateral conference on Afghanistan
Tehran supports Pakistan's regional approach to the war-torn country.
ISLAMABAD / TEHRAN - Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Monday received an invitation from his Iranian counterpart Hussein Amir Abdullahian to attend a meeting on the Afghan situation in Tehran.
The Iranian Foreign Minister invited Shah Mehmood Qureshi to attend the second ministerial meeting of Afghanistan's neighbors, the Foreign Office said in a statement.
The Iranian minister stressed in a telephone conversation that Tehran fully supported Pakistan's initiative for a regional approach to Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, FM Qureshi appreciated the invitation of Amir Abdullahian and hoped that the multilateral meeting would further strengthen the regional perspective on the situation in Afghanistan. He also called for closer coordination for regional peace, stability and development.
The MOFA statement added that FM Qureshi emphasized the need to maintain international engagement in light of Afghanistan's economic situation.
He added that the international community should step up humanitarian aid in the run-up to next winter and take steps to ensure economic stability in the country.
The second round of meetings of Afghanistan's neighbors is scheduled for next week and will be attended by FMs from Pakistan, China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan and Russia.
Earlier in September, the first virtual meeting of Afghanistan's neighbors was held on the initiative of Pakistan.
