Officials from Pakistan decline to provide comments regarding the
matter
The Washington Post, an American news outlet, has recently published a story on 'Discord Leaks', revealing compromised documents on important matters, including a leaked conversation between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar on Pakistan's relationship with the United States. The conversation records the dignitaries discussing the country's diplomatic ties with the Joe Biden-led administration in the context of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, as well as Pakistan's voting on the war at the United Nations.
According to the
documents, Khar argues that Pakistan should avoid appeasing the West and
maintain its strategic partnership with China. Pakistani officials have
declined to comment on the matter.
Washington Post's story, in which the records were leaked, focuses on the declining support for the US on the war between Russia and Ukraine. It mentions that Pakistan was one of the 32 countries that abstained when the UN General Assembly voted on the matter on February 23.
The story
comes at a time when the US has confirmed that it has no issue with Pakistan
importing oil from Moscow, and State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel
stated that "each country is going to make its own sovereign decisions as
it relates to its energy supply."
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted Chinese
leader Xi Jinping in March for a two-day meeting, which was closely watched due
to its significance for the changing political and diplomatic atmosphere in the
region.
