Supreme Court grants major legal relief to Imran Khan, government's pleas rejected
Islamabad: The Supreme Court of
Pakistan has completed the hearing of important cases pending against former
Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Imran. After the hearing, Imran
Khan's lawyer, Salman Safdar, and his family members came out of the court and
spoke to the media.
According to details, today two-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi heard
14 cases related to Imran Khan and Bushra Imran in the Supreme Court. In all
the cases included in the cause list, only the names of Imran Ahmed Khan and
his wife were listed. These cases included the Cypher case, the Al-Qadir Trust
case, the Toshakhana case, and various FIRs.
Defense lawyer Salman Safdar told
the media that the government had filed bail cancellation applications in all
these cases, in which Imran Khan had previously received relief from the
Islamabad High Court. However, today the Supreme Court dismissed all the bail
cancellation applications filed by the government as ineffective.
According to Salman Safdar, the
FIA and special prosecutors in the cipher case want to appeal against the
Islamabad High Court’s decision, in which Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Qureshi
were acquitted. The Supreme Court has given the government time to seek further
instructions in this regard.
He revealed that he is currently
representing Imran Khan in more than 300 criminal cases, out of which about 50
cases are currently active. He said that many bail applications have been
pending for years, for which decisions are not being taken, which raises serious
questions about the justice system.
Salman Safdar alleged that there
is a severe stagnation in the Islamabad High Court, where neither cases are
being scheduled, nor lawyers are being allowed to meet their clients. According
to him, only one brief meeting has been possible with Imran Khan and Bushra
Imran in the last five months, which is insufficient for legal preparation.
He added that the lack of a meeting
between a lawyer and a client is a violation of the constitutional right. The
lawyer requested the Chief Justice of Pakistan to either schedule the cases
immediately or allow the legal team to meet his client so that the defense can
be conducted effectively.
Salman Safdar also expressed
concern over Imran Khan’s health and said that no formal information was given
to the lawyer regarding his eye treatment and overall health, which is
worrisome. He stressed that it is also the professional responsibility of the
lawyer to take care of the physical and mental health of the client.
Finally, he expressed hope that
justice would be delivered in the Supreme Court and that the legal team would
be given full access and equal opportunities in the upcoming hearings.
