Anom: Hundreds arrested for large-scale global crime using messaging app
Authorities say more than 800 suspected criminals have been arrested for using the FBI's encrypted messaging app.
In the operation, co-sponsored by Australia and the FBI, the devices were secretly distributed to criminals through the ANOM app, allowing police to crack down on drug trafficking, money laundering, and even murder. Their chats about conspiracies can also be monitored.
Authorities called it a watershed moment.
The targets included drug lords and people with links to the mafia.
Drugs, weapons, luxury vehicles and cash were also seized in the operation, which was carried out in more than a dozen countries. It includes eight tonnes of cocaine, 250 guns and more than 48 48 million (سے 34 million) in various currencies and cryptocurrencies around the world.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the operation was a "huge blow" to "organized crime" around the world.
The European Union's police agency, Europol, described Operation Trojan Shield / Greenlight as "the biggest law enforcement operation against encrypted communications".
