French President Emmanuel Macron has been slapped in the face during an official visit to southeastern France.

In a video circulating on social media, Mr. Macron Valence is seen walking on an obstacle on a three-hour journey outside the city.

A man in a green T-shirt slapped Mr. Macron in the face before officers rushed in. Meanwhile, the president was ousted.

According to French media reports, two people have been arrested since the incident.

The man allegedly chanted "Down with Macron ism" when he slapped the president.

In the video, Mr. Macron briefly returned to the barrier after the incident and spoke to the crowd again.

It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. According to AFP, the local prefecture said that he and another person were being questioned by sex workers.

According to a tweet from a French journalist, officers took to the streets of Valence shortly after the slap.

Politicians have strongly condemned the incident.

Prime Minister Jean Costak soon told the National Assembly that while democracy means debate and legitimate disagreement, "it should never mean violence, verbal aggression, and even less physical assault."

Left-wing leader Jane Luke Melinchen tweeted "solidarity with the president" shortly after the slap.

And the far-right leader, Marine Le Pen, has posted his condemnation, saying "although the democratic debate may be bitter, it can never tolerate physical violence."

President Macron is currently on a visit to France, where he has just visited a hotel school in Tain Hermitage. Authorities say his visit to the area was to continue on Tuesday.

The president's visit comes as a major step forward for French bars and restaurants, which will be able to reopen to indoor customers after a seven-month shutdown. France's night curfew on Wednesday is also being pushed back from 21:00 to 23:00.
