Pakistan's Supreme Court had ruled on Thursday that the
circumstances of Khan's arrest were unlawful and ordered him to be placed under
court protection overnight, limiting access to him to 10 visitors. Imran Khan
has denied all accusations against him, and his supporters believe the charges
are fabricated by the government, which is worried about his party's increasing
strength ahead of the upcoming elections.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has compared the violent
protesters with "terrorists" and called their actions
"unforgivable crimes." The tension has led to clashes in several
provinces, with dozens of people injured, several killed, and hundreds
arrested, including key members of Imran Khan's party. The military was called
in to confront the protesters, which only fueled their anger and frustration.
As prime minister, Imran Khan was seen as having the
military's support, but tensions rose after his ouster by Parliament. Imran
Khan has accused the prime minister, interior minister, and an intelligence officer
of being behind an assassination attempt against him, which he narrowly
survived in November. These accusations have only intensified in recent days.
