Committee is responsible for formulating a plan of action in relation to elections and engaging with government
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has formed a negotiation
team, as instructed by party chairman Imran Khan, to engage in talks with the
government. The team, consisting of Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Pervez Khattak, Asad
Qaiser, Haleem Adil Sheikh, Aun Abbasi, Murad Saeed, and Hammad Azhar, has been
entrusted with the responsibility of devising an electoral plan and interacting
with the government.
Imran Khan, speaking at his residence in Lahore's Zaman Park,
mentioned that in the event of his disqualification or arrest, Shah Mahmood
Qureshi would assume leadership of the party, while Murad Saeed would emerge as
a prominent figure in the future, as reported by Express News. He expressed
confidence that significant changes were imminent and denied any conflict
between him and the military.
Khan disclosed that he had consulted his legal team regarding
the release of detained party workers and that the party would approach the
courts soon. He emphasized that, aside from elections, there was no viable
solution to the country's pressing issues, criticizing the current government
for damaging the national economy. Khan acknowledged the existence of plans to
arrest, disqualify, or even harm him, stating that Shah Mahmood Qureshi and
Pervez Khattak would handle party affairs in such circumstances.
Regarding party members leaving, Khan acknowledged that some
departures were forced, and the true faces of others had been exposed. He
emphasized the significance of youth as the party's greatest asset and asserted
their right to future political opportunities, expressing confidence in PTI's
success in the upcoming elections.
Khan assured that President Arif Alvi would abide by the constitution and proposed a referendum to demonstrate public support. He pledged that he had never advocated violence or destruction, referencing past incidents where he refrained from retaliating despite being fired upon. Khan alleged that a conspiracy had been orchestrated against PTI, emphasizing that violence was unnecessary when the party had public support.
PDM responsible for backbreaking inflation
In a tweet, Imran Khan expressed his concerns about the
severe inflation and significant devaluation of the Pakistani rupee, pointing
out that the government's focus seemed to be solely on suppressing PTI. He
highlighted that the US dollar was being sold at Rs310 in the open market,
while the country was facing a record level of backbreaking inflation.
Furthermore, he emphasized the alarming rate of debt accumulation and the
shrinking economy. Imran Khan noted that the annual tax revenue collection was
insufficient to cover the interest payments on loans.
Imran Khan criticized the current government for prioritizing
coercive and oppressive measures to crush PTI instead of addressing the
nation's economic crisis. He also accused the PDM leadership of being
indifferent to the historic devaluation of the rupee since their illicit wealth
was stored abroad in dollars. He lamented that it would be the people of
Pakistan who would suffer the consequences of inflation and poverty while the
PDM leaders would benefit from the devaluation of the rupee.
Nawaz Sharif Declines Talks Offer
In response to the development, Nawaz Sharif, the leader of
the PML-N, rejected Imran Khan's proposal for talks with the government,
stating that discussions should only take place with fellow politicians. He
expressed his refusal, mentioning that there would be no negotiations with a
group he referred to as "terrorists and saboteurs" who vandalize
memorials of martyrs and ignite unrest in the country, as conveyed through his
official Twitter account.
The establishment of the committee followed the arrests of
several key aides of Imran Khan, who were taken into custody after his
supporters engaged in violent acts, setting fire to public buildings and
military installations. While many have been released since then, they promptly
announced their resignations from the PTI.
Prominent figures within the PTI, including Shireen Mazari,
Aamir Kiani, Amin Aslam, Mahmood Moulvi, Aftab Siddiqui, Fayyazul Hassan
Chohan, Firdous Ashiq Awan, Musarrat Cheema, Abrarul Haq, and others, have also
announced their departure from the former ruling party.
Asad Umar, a close aide of Imran Khan, resigned from his
positions as Secretary-General and Core Committee member, citing the ongoing
situation. Shortly after, Fawad Chaudhry, another trusted confidant of Imran
Khan, also stepped down from the PTI.
Numerous other mid-tier leaders have also left the party,
with Imran Khan claiming that they were coerced into resigning to weaken him
and dismantle the PTI.
Imran Khan had previously mentioned that his attempts to
communicate with the powerful generals of the country had been unanswered. The
civilian government, comprised of his political rivals, did not indicate a
willingness to engage in talks as the crackdown on his party persisted.
The appeal for talks came as pressure mounted on Imran Khan's
party and its supporters. According to Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, 33
individuals had been handed over to the army to face trial in military courts
on charges of attacking armed forces' installations. These individuals were
among the thousands detained since Imran Khan's arrest on May 9, which
triggered violent protests across the country.
Human rights groups have raised concerns about the military
trials of civilians, arguing that they cannot ensure a fair trial. These courts
operate without external oversight or media coverage.
