A Simplified Guide to Turkey's Run-off: President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vs. Main Opposition Candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu

As citizens across Turkey participate in the presidential run-off, here's a concise breakdown of the crucial details:

·         Incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdogan, aged 69, aims to extend his 20-year-long tenure by securing another five years in power.

·         His main contender is 74-year-old Kemal Kilicdaroglu, representing the primary opposition.

·         In the initial round held on May 14, Erdogan secured nearly 50 percent of the vote, closely followed by Kilicdaroglu with approximately 45 percent.

·         Sinan Ogan, an ultranationalist candidate who garnered 5.2 percent of the vote and placed third in the first round, has pledged his support to Erdogan.

·         Remarkably, this Sunday marks the first occasion where Turkish voters are participating in a second round to determine their next president."

Turkey Elections Begin: Voting Commences

At 8 am (05:00 GMT), polling stations across Turkey opened their doors to voters, commencing the election process that will continue until 5 pm (14:00 GMT). The initial reports indicate a robust turnout, and experts anticipate a substantial level of voter participation, considering the strong showing in the first round, which recorded an 89 percent turnout.

Turkish citizens residing abroad have already cast their votes before the Election Day, as was the case on May 14. Approximately 1.9 million voters in 73 countries and at border gates have exercised their right to vote.

Both President Erdogan and main opposition candidate Kilicdaroglu have fulfilled their civic duty by casting their votes. Erdogan voted in Istanbul, while Kilicdaroglu cast his ballot in Ankara.

With only two candidates in contention, it is widely predicted that the results will be available earlier compared to the first round, possibly announced in the evening."

Turkish Election Agenda Unveiled: Smooth Voting Process Amidst Shifting Campaign Focus

According to electoral officials, the voting process has thus far proceeded without any issues. In the build-up to the first round, the electoral campaign predominantly revolved around two critical topics: the state of the Turkish economy and the response to the devastating earthquakes that occurred in February, claiming the lives of tens of thousands in the southern regions.

However, after the initial round, the campaign landscape underwent a noticeable shift, with a strong emphasis on the fate of refugees in Turkey and the issue of "terrorism." The Justice and Development Party (AK Party), led by Erdogan, along with its allies, attained a parliamentary majority in the polls held two weeks ago.

Notably, despite facing criticism for a sluggish initial response to the earthquake disaster, the AK Party emerged as the top contender in 10 out of the 11 provinces affected by the calamity.

In the run-off, the voter count has witnessed an increase of over 47,500 individuals who reached the age of 18 over the past two weeks. Consequently, the total electorate in Turkey has now reached a staggering 60.8 million.
