The Turkish President Commences another Five-Year Term as he Takes Oath at Parliament

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has officially assumed his position as the head of state for another five-year term after securing a historic victory in a run-off election. In the ceremony held at the parliament in Ankara, broadcasted live on television, the 69-year-old leader took the oath, pledging to protect the nation's independence and existence. Erdogan emphasised his commitment to embrace all 85 million citizens of Turkey, regardless of their political affiliations, backgrounds, or religious beliefs.

Following the inauguration, an elaborate ceremony took place at the presidential palace in the capital, attended by numerous world leaders. Despite considerable diplomatic challenges and tensions with the West, Erdogan, who is Turkey's longest-serving leader, emerged victorious in the run-off election held on May 28 against a formidable opposition coalition. This triumph came amid an ongoing economic crisis characterised by rampant inflation and the devaluation of the Turkish lira. Additionally, Erdogan faced criticism following a devastating earthquake in February that claimed the lives of over 50,000 people.

The official election results revealed that Erdogan secured 52.2 percent of the votes, while his opponent Kemal Kilicdaroglu received 47.8 percent. Emre Erdogan from Bilgi University noted that during his speech, the president repeatedly emphasised unity and solidarity, urging voters to put aside resentment and anger experienced during the election campaign. Erdogan also highlighted the significance of a liberal and inclusive constitution, a departure from his previous rhetoric. He further emphasised Turkey's role as a peacemaker in the region, underscoring its importance in global politics.
