The incident occurred near
Murrieta, California, as the aircraft, originating from Las Vegas, was
attempting its second approach at an airport, according to officials.
Tragedy struck on Saturday as a
small plane traveling from Las Vegas crashed near a Murrieta, California
airport, resulting in the loss of six lives, according to authorities.
Emergency responders discovered
the aircraft ablaze in a field adjacent to French Valley Airport, as reported
by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. The six individuals on board were
declared deceased at the scene, confirmed the department.
At present, the identities of the
victims have not been disclosed.
The incident involving the Cessna
C550 plane was reported around 4:15 a.m. local time. Fire officials stated that
the crash caused approximately an acre of vegetation to ignite before the fire
was eventually contained over an hour later.
According to the Federal Aviation
Administration, the flight had departed from Harry Reid International Airport
in Las Vegas at 3:15 a.m. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), in
conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration, is currently
investigating the crash.
During a press conference on
Saturday, NTSB investigator Elliott Simpson explained that a foggy marine layer
had started to envelop the area, leading to reduced visibility shortly before
the pilot's planned landing. Simpson revealed that the pilot informed air traffic
controllers of the intention to execute a missed approach procedure, which is
typically done when the pilot cannot spot the runway and intends to make
another landing attempt at a later time.
The pilot's request for another
landing attempt was approved by air traffic controllers, Simpson stated.
However, during an instrument landing approach, the aircraft crashed
approximately 500 feet short of the runway.
Simpson highlighted that the
weather conditions were near the minimums required for landing at the airport,
indicating that visibility and ceilings were sufficient for landing but were at
the bare minimum. The NTSB will continue its investigation to determine the
cause of the crash.
Remarkably, this incident
occurred just days after another fatal plane crash in the same vicinity.
On Tuesday, a single-engine
Cessna 172 crashed shortly after takeoff from French Valley Airport in
Murrieta. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department reported that the pilot,
identified as Jared Newman, a 39-year-old resident of Temecula, was pronounced
dead at the scene. Three juvenile passengers were transported to a hospital
with varying degrees of injuries, and their current conditions were not
available at the time of reporting.
Mr. Simpson emphasized that the
crashes at French Valley Airport may be entirely unrelated, noting that it is
still early in the investigation process.
