Brussels: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has proposed a new joint mission to protect and operate Kabul International Airport following the withdrawal of other NATO troops, including Pakistan and Hungary.
Speaking to reporters during a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in Brussels on Monday, the Turkish president said his country would seek "diplomatic, diplomatic" support from the United States if it maintains troops in Afghanistan for security operations. Logistics and financial support will be needed.
According to TRT World, Ankara has reportedly offered airport security amid major transport routes and security concerns at the airport, Kabul's main gateway.
"If they don't want us to leave Afghanistan, if they want help there (Turkey), the diplomatic, logistical and financial support that the United States will provide will be very important," Erdogan said.
Turkey currently has about 500 troops in the war-torn country.
